Parent/guardian and community participation at school and in school activities benefits us all. We welcome all to volunteer in classrooms or chaperone events. Depending on the nature of the volunteer work, a background check may be required before working with students. Please contact the JNES front office or stop by to obtain or complete any necessary paperwork. Please note that background checks can take up to 48 hours to complete.

Volunteers who are in the school for 4 or more hours in a week are required by Alaska statute (AS 47.17.020) to complete an online training on mandated reporting of child abuse and neglect. This training is offered free of charge by the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development (DEED). Instructions for accessing the course are below, but if you need assistance, please visit the JNES front office, and we will be glad to help you.
On the DEED eLearning home page, click "Request New Account" under the New Accounts heading. After you have created your account and have access to log in, select "Catalog" along the top of the screen and search for "mandated reporter". Select the course titled "Mandated Reporters of Child Abuse and Neglect" and click on the Enroll button. The course will now appear on your Dashboard and you can view the course content. The course takes about 90 minutes to complete and does not have to be done all at once. After completing the course, you have the option to download a PDF copy of your completion certificate. This can be forwarded to the JNES office at [email protected].
