Kivalina is a coastal village located on an island that separates the Chukchi Sea from the Kivalina River. There are about 141 students in the school and 100% are Alaska Native. This is the only village in the region that hunts bowhead whales. On the island where Kivalina is located, three ancient bodies and artifacts were discovered belonging to a people who went extinct over a millennium ago.
